Ice on the Windshield

 nowhere man

A small white screen
three words and a letter
a simple beginning,
not unlike life

in the beginning there was none
but out of nowhere came man
and when asked from where
his answer was lost

this blew our mind
for how could we lose
the words
of the nowhere man

or let him get away
to slip round the corner
gently closing the first door
and opening the next…

A small white screen
three words and a
simple beginning,
not unlike life

in search of the nowhere man

 listen

ah that guitar does play
talking to me in ways
that takes me places
where I ride the waves

while listening to poems
put to blazing music
stealing my soul
and kidnapping me from time

drums beat a song
I’ve heard so many times
returning me to yesterday
while looking for more

hear the music, feel those strings
my god! take my television
throw the paper next door
just turn the volume up

and shut the door

 little man

he was sashaying through all the blogs
looking here and there
a message hidden in plain sight
eluding his diligent eye

coded words he could’ve read
glancing harmlessly off his rock noggin
so busy a bragging
to understand the laughter

trying to draw fire
friend or foe
either would work
recognition needed

cutting others deep
their blood of no matter
his and his only
a gift from him to us

and as he went by me
I could not help but chuckle
at the little man
so small I hardly saw him

 Where am I

bells are ringing
in a far off distance…
and outside my window
yellow leaves, yellow leaves

the universe beckons to all
nature’s cry in the dark
most, however do not hear
a tree falling in an empty forest

the sun is reflecting its glow
bouncing it off my window
onto the tree outside
with the yellow leaves

I balance the need to know
with soothing ignorance
although often I like to dance
with the devil

sitting here; contemplating
the way things are put together
like a tree
with yellow leaves

for the devil is a devilish dancer
who brings me full circle?
and like a magnet seeking a pole
I’m still looking

at yellow leaves
outside my window
and seeking, always seeking
the way things are put together

Another Song I wish I had written

Note: The song below, was written and sung by Brad Cotter, and if you've never heard the song.... all I can say is it blew me away. A little sidenote here - I first heard this song on a show called "Nashville Stars", where unknown people strive to win the top award. I don't watch this show much, so, I don't know a whole lot about it, but what I do know - is that over a period of several weeks the show "weeds out" a bunch of performers and finally get down to a final 5 I think, and then the television audience votes on who they think is the best. Anyway, Brad Cotter was hanging in there pretty good and made the final 5, but my wife and I thought another guy would win the top award, cause he just seemed to perform better, you know, better voice, better songs, etc. etc. ---------- until the final night when it was between this other guy and Brad Cotter for the top award. I still thought the other guy had it won hands down, until Brad sang this song (for the first time), and that was it. There was never a doubt, and indeed the t.v. audience voted him the winner. In my opinion, this "song" won it for him. And, to his credit - he did write it - but "any" singer could of sung it and it would of been a hit in my books. The song was released as a single, but stayed in the Country Music chart and never crossed over into other charts. My sense is that it did not go over to the degree that I thought it would, but I am not real sure about it. Anyway, I was wondering if others had heard it, and discounted it or what. Here it is, and like I said, you really need to "hear it". --- Ice ------------

Things get in the way
The rush of everyday
Ordinary stuff we all get into
Wouldn't it be sad, if all you ever had
was a granite epitaph that said 'I meant to'

So any pretty woman I didn't take the time to kiss
Any crazy thing I didn't do, 'I meant to'

Any dirty liar I didn't stare right in the eye
and make him tell the naked truth, 'I meant to'

I'm always on the run some things get lost some get done
But if I didn't have all the fun I meant to, 'I meant to'

And if I never came out and said to each and everyone I love, how much I really do, 'I meant to'

VERSE 2

Maybe this one chance
Is all we really have
Maybe all you got, is what you get to
Well I ain't gonna cry
I'll give it my best try
Then kiss the world goodbye and say 'I meant to'

So any pretty woman I didn't take the time to kiss
Any crazy thing I didn't do, 'I meant to'

Any dirty liar I didn't stare right in the eye
and make him tell the naked truth, 'I meant to'

I'm always on the run some things get lost some get done
But if I didn't have all the fun I meant to, 'I meant to'

And if I never came out and said to each and everyone I love, how much I really do, 'I meant to'

'I meant to'
'I meant to'
