Ice on the Windshield

back in the day when time didn't move
Back to Full Blog

time

time was – when it hardly moved – time that is

n    think back to when you were 15 …

couldn’t drive a car – didn’t have one…

and – way -- too grown up for bikes or scooters…

jump forward a few short months

now 16 - you’re driving, dreaming and living

‘People Just Got To Be Free’

1968 seen 20 on the age dial

“the ink is black”

remember the opening of “Hang on Sloopy?”

the drums ….

Sloopy lives in a very bad part of town….

me in the back seat - 15 years old

two girls and me - all three of us

too shy to do anything but make jokes

hitching a ride to the city

going to the state fair

listening to

“Hang on Sloopy”

just yesterday I say

sloopy let your hair down

let it hang down on me

just who was sloopy?

yardbirds just hanging around the yard

but it’s too late to say you’re sorry

Zombies….

The “M and B Club” – was “the place” to go in my day and when you were there you were “there” – though I never knew what M or B meant – I do remember the music, the beer and the girls …

‘she’s not there’ you know

how about the opening of …

“Don’t Worry Baby” …. Shit --- that song takes me back

Well it’s been building up inside me for oh - I don’t know how long….

I don't know why but I keep thinking

something will go wrong

Don’t Worry Baby – everything will turn out alright

I guess I should of kept my mouth shut…

I remember the light on my 8-track stereo was ‘purple’ and Don’t Worry Baby is playing and I’m proud of the 8-track cause I don’t need any cardboard inserted in the top or bottom for it to play…. Gee…. Don’t worry baby

Back in the day we had - JFK, John Glenn, Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays, Elvis, Roger Maris, Jim Brown….

Who does this generation have ? ==== Obama – weak kneed, skinny black guy who can’t bowl and gags on a beer and a woman who throws back whiskey shots with the men -- or steroid junkies - like Roger Clemons and Barry (Pillsbury Doughboy) Bonds.

Groovin…. On a Sunday afternoon….

..and we did

groovin down a crowded avenue…

wouldn’t you love to flip the pages backward and lose the computers, cell phones, fax machines, robotic voice mail, etc. etc.??  wouldn’t you?

….go back to the gasoline pump – where the gas was 50 cents a gallon and someone ‘pumped’ it for you and give you a glass for stopping by….

You baby … nobody but you…

turtles…

candy is sweet but it just can’t compete with you … baby…

a little ray of sunshine

 a little bit of soul

just a touch of magic

What a day for a daydream

What a day for a daydreaming boy

Now I’m lost in a daydream

Yo… just me a dreaming about days gone by and even though time isn’t on my side - it’s time to have a sweet dream…

So… the year is 2008 ….  Whatever happen to those years between 1960 and 2008?  All 48 of them?

Where did they go?

Hmm… must of went somewhere with Scratch’s Mojo.

So…

If I find Scratch’s Mojo (for him)

Then … I find the 48 years between 1960 and now, yes?

This Diamond Ring….

Brown Eye Girl…. One of the best openings of any song

Hey where did we go days when the rain came

Down in the hollow playing a new game

Laughing and running

Skipping and jumping

In the misty morning

My brown eye girl

Van Morrison talks about a ‘transistor radio’….

Give me a “Victory Party” after the football game, a beer, and Sherry showing up – looking for me…

Screw 2008 – give me 68 or 69 or 70 or ..….

We skipped the light fandango...Turned cartwheels cross the floor,

I remember those days very well. Heading to the beach with my buddies to the sounds of Dirty Water..Down by the river...down by the banks of the river Charles. Tunes by the Association, Turtles, The 59th Street Bridge Song. Yes, lets go back there. How about August of 1968? You pick the beach.

Oh Iceman...how I long for days of yesterday back when life was exceedingly good and it was safe to take a stroll under the moonlight and Coke was a sodapop. When we went to the drive-in movies and purchased penny candy and your neighbors always lended a helping hand. You actually knew your neighbors and had bake sales and kids played jumprope in the streets in the summertime and ran through water spraying out of a fire hydrant laughing and catching fireflies in a jar while wishing upon a star....

I would trade all of this fancy smancy technology for a simplier kind of life from long ago. Wouldn't it be lovely?

Loved your walk down Memory Lane... even if they weren't the same streets I grew up on. I think all of us wax nostalgic for what our own generation knew as the "good old days". Good to see ya, Ice!! :) -Six

Sherry - that does it! "Procol Harum," and "A Whiter Shade of Pale," was John Lennon's favorite song ... yeah, I'm going to have to dig out "The Big Chill" and watch it again..... time to watch a good movie for a change - instead of renting "A New Release"...only to watch a third of it and turn it off.....

thanks for coming by and dropping all those tunes on me and as for the beach --- hell it doesn't matter .... any beach will do, you know.

"and Coke was a sodapop." Those were the days, yes? lol Your comment about "drive in movies" - instantly took me back to my home town when we used to 'sneak in' the drive-in by getting in the trunk of the car. I swear the old guy who took the tickets knew we were back there..... laugh.... and just let us in anyway, lol.

penny candy.... lol

I would trade all of this fancy smancy technology for a simplier kind of life from long ago. I would too PB and yes it would be lovely....

Cracker ..... I guess you've seen "The Big Chill?" I think everyone our age has, but even if you have it's always a good one to watch on a Friday or Saturday night..... hmmm... a little Crown and a good movie wouldn't hurt would it? Damn, I don't do the cigs anymore or anything that burns for that matter.... and I don't drink like I used to (screw the cap off and throw it away drinking)...

keep playing the music ...

"Sloopy"....All this time I thought it was Snoopy!

by ^BELLE^ (PM , CC ) on Thursday May 1, 2008 @ 12:57 AM

Belle -- not to worry - there are still many many people who think snoopy instead of sloopy.... I just love the song ... lol

thanks for stopping in

ice

p.s. below is some unasked for - history of the song - just - for your information..

"Hang on Sloopy" is a hit song by the pop group The McCoys which was #1 in America in October 1965 and is the official rock song of the state of Ohio and The Ohio State University. It was written by Wes Farrell and Bert Russell and is named for singer Dorothy Sloop (1913-1998), who used the name "Sloopy" on stage.

The song was originally titled "My Girl Sloopy" and was first recorded by The Vibrations in 1964 on Atlantic Records (45-2222), becoming a top thirty hit. It was the title track of a live 1965 recording (released on Rhapsody in 1966) by the Ramsey Lewis Trio which earned a gold record. It has also been recorded by Arseno Rodriguez (Bang 1966), The Supremes (Motown 1966), The Kingsmen (WAND 1966), Little Caesar and the Consuls, The Yardbirds, Saving Jane, Jan & Dean (Capitol 1966) and Die Toten Hosen (2002). It has also been performed by Johnny Thunders and the Oddballs in a medley with "Louie Louie" and can be heard on the "Add Water and Stir" live Japan bootleg. In 1965, The Strangeloves, a rock band who purported to be from Australia, decided to make the song the follow-up to their hit single "I Want Candy", and began performing the song in concert. However, the Dave Clark Five, who they were touring with, told the Strangeloves that they were going to record their own version of the song, copying the Strangeloves' arrangement. The Strangeloves realized that the Dave Clark Five's version would probably outsell their own, but they were still enjoying success with "I Want Candy" and did not want to release a new single yet. So the trio—who were, in reality, three successful writer/producers from Brooklyn, New York--recruited a group from Dayton, Ohio, Rick and the Raiders, to record the song instead. The group's name was changed to The McCoys (to avoid confusion with another popular band of the era, Paul Revere and the Raiders), and their 16-year-old leader, Rick Zehringer, became known as Rick Derringer. The group added vocals and a guitar solo to the already-completed Strangeloves backing track, and the single was released on Bang Records. It entered the chart on August 14, 1965, effectively beating the Dave Clark Five to the charts. The single went on to hit number one on October 2.

The song gained an association with the Ohio State University after its marching band began playing it at football games; it first played it October 9, 1965 after a band member, John Tatgenhorst, begged the director to try playing it. After finally convincing the director, Tatgenhorst arranged the song and the band played. After the crowd reaction, the band began to play it at every game and now it is a Saturday tradition to play the song before the start of the fourth quarter of every Buckeye game. Since then, the song has become an unofficial fight song for the university, with it appearing on the band's CDs and as a free download on its website.

The song has also become a feature at all Cincinnati Bengals and Cleveland Browns home games where, like at Ohio State, it is traditionally played before the fourth quarter. Fans usually chant the letters "O, H, I, O" during the pauses in the chorus while mimicking the shape of the letters with their arms. It is also sometimes done at home games of the Cleveland Cavaliers and Cleveland Indians.

The "O, H, I, O" chant was incorporated into a version of the song recorded by the Columbus, Ohio based rock band Saving Jane.

When I read the Victory Party and Sherry reference I figured you knew someone by that name many moons ago. I knew there were no comments yet and couldn't resist the beach invitiation. LOL.

Somehow or other, when I woke up this morning I was hearing "Do You Know What I Mean" by Lee Michaels in my head. A quick trip to project playlist and they had it!!!!!!!! So, I threw it up on my blog playlist and had myself some fun listening to it.

Thanks much Ice. I like learning about the background of songs.

When my daughter was little, she thought the lyrics in the song, Drift Away was:

Give me the BEACH BOYS.....

And, from an Elton John song (can't remember the title right now), until LAST year, I thought the lyrics were:

She had ELECTRIC BOOBS, HER MA DID TOO....

Live and learn...
